The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) and the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities launched twenty Africa – Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoRE) in the summer of 2023. These clusters are intended to address key societal and scientific challenges through scientific excellence and equitable partnerships, with each cluster having a long-term plan for research, education, and capacity building.

The CoRE in Interdisciplinary Peace Research is co-led by Addis Ababa University and King’s College London and currently has 14 institutional members. This includes Makerere University (Uganda), University of Lagos (Nigeria), University of Ghana (Ghana), University of Oslo (Norway), Ghent University (Belgium), University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Pretoria (South Africa), University of Cape Town (South Africa), University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), University of Warwick (UK), Obafemi Awolowo University (Nigeria), Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED).

The initial discussion among the partners of the CoRE in Interdisciplinary Peace Research was initiated in April of 2023. Over the past months, the CoRE in Interdisciplinary Peace Research has started holding regular virtual meetings for representatives of partner institutions. These regular virtual meetings, inter alia, have served for: conferring important matters among the partners; planning future activities; and monitoring the implementation of agreed upon activities. The partners have held an in person meeting at the University of Lagos on 16 November 2023, which convened representatives of the co-lead institutions as well as representatives of Makerere University (Uganda), and University of Lagos (Nigeria).

The CoRE in Interdisciplinary Peace Research is currently organizing a Scientific Writing and Publishing Workshop, which will run from 1st until 3rd of July 2024 in Bishoftu, Ethiopia. The workshop is intended to build the writing and publishing skills of students enrolled in a PhD programme in the social sciences or peace and security studies and early-career postdoctoral researchers based at African and European universities.
